In 2019, the Fondation Cartier in Paris hosted the exhibition Claudia Andujar. La Lutte Yanomami, showing the work of the renowned photographer and activist. Famous worldwide for her devotion to the Yanomami, one of the largest indigenous group of Brazil, Claudia Andujar has spent fifty years of her life documenting and fighting for the preservation of the Yanomami people and their culture.

Pursuing their collaboration with the museum, design studio deValence was in charge of the visual identity of the exhibition. It’s characterized by the use of Mars Condensed from Production Type, which is present in all media to catch the eye. In fact, the vertical lines of the condensed typeface appear almost as stripes, contrasting on the posters with the bright-colored homogenous photographs. The letters somehow evoke the verticality of the Amazon forest in which the Yanomami live, an impression that’s reinforced by the exhibition’s scenography, with the walls painted in green. However, the effect of Mars Condensed on the viewer is not one of natural serenity: It rather is imposant, visible, urgent – very much like the recognition the Yanomami have been fighting for, for so long. Through the use of Mars Condensed, deValence succeeded in visually transmitting the dedication of Claudia Andujar to her cause.

Mars Condensed is paired with Borges, a typeface family by the Latin American foundry PampaType and named after Argentine writer and poet Jorge Luis Borges.

  • How to create diamond sparkle Photoshop brush
  • How to add sparkles to a photo

Follow along with us over on our Envato Tuts+ YouTube channel:

What You’ll Need

You can add the sparkles to any photo. Here’s the one I used:

How to Make a Sparkle Brush in Photoshop

Step 1

Create a New File with the following dimensions:

Image of sparkle brush photoshop 1

Step 2

Fill the background with black using the Paint Bucket Tool (G).

Image of sparkle brush photoshop 2

Step 3

Create a New Layer. Fill it with black again and go to Filter > Noise > Add Noise. Use these settings:

Image of sparkle brush photoshop 3

Step 4

Go to Filter > Filter Gallery > Watercolor. This filter will turn the noise into individual spots, and this is exactly what we need!

Image of sparkle brush photoshop 4
Image of sparkle brush photoshop 5

Step 5

Duplicate this layer (Control-J) and hide the original. Name the original “tiny speckles” and the copy “speckles”.

Image of sparkle brush photoshop 6

Step 6

Try to find three spots that seem to form a triangle together. If you can’t find them, use the Lasso Tool (Q) to move the spots around and create such a formation yourself.

Image of sparkle brush photoshop 7

Step 7

Then resize the layer (Control-T) to fill the whole canvas with just these three spots. Use the Crop Tool (C) once to cut the area outside of the canvas.

Image of sparkle brush photoshop 8
Image of sparkle brush photoshop 9

Step 8

Change the Blend Mode of the layer to Screen. This will make the black part of the layer transparent.

Image of sparkle brush photoshop 9 2

Step 9

Duplicate the “speckles” layer and go to Filter > Blur > Gaussian Blur. Add a subtle blur.

Image of sparkle brush photoshop 10
Image of sparkle brush photoshop 11

Step 10

Duplicate the “speckles” layer again and go to Filter > Blur > Motion Blur. Add a strong smudge to these spots, and then lower the Opacity of this layer.

Image of sparkle brush photoshop 12
Image of sparkle brush photoshop 13
Image of sparkle brush photoshop 14

Step 11

Repeat this step, this time making the smudge shorter and more opaque.

Image of sparkle brush photoshop 15
Image of sparkle brush photoshop 16
Image of sparkle brush photoshop 17

Step 12

Do this one more time, this time without changing the Opacity at all.

Image of sparkle brush photoshop 18
Image of sparkle brush photoshop 19
Image of sparkle brush photoshop 20

Step 13

Create a similar smudge one more time, this time using the opposite angle.

Image of sparkle brush photoshop 21

Step 14

Now select all the “speckles” layers by holding Shift and pressing Control-E. Change the Blend Mode to Screen again.

Image of sparkle brush photoshop 22

Step 15

Duplicate this layer, make the spots smaller by pressing Control-T, and rotate them to make them less obviously copied.

Image of sparkle brush photoshop 23

Step 16

Repeat this process once or twice to create more of these small spots.

Image of sparkle brush photoshop 24

Step 17

Show the “tiny speckles” layer again. If there are spots right on the edges of the canvas, cover them with black using a brush.

Image of sparkle brush photoshop 25

Step 18

Right-click the layer stack and select Flatten Image. Then press Control-I to invert the colors.

Image of sparkle brush photoshop 26

Step 19

Go to Edit > Define Brush Preset. Give your brush a name.

Image of sparkle brush photoshop 27

Step 20

The brush is done, but we need to adjust its settings to make it work. Open the Brush Settings panel (F5) and increase the Spacing.

Image of sparkle brush photoshop 28

Step 21

Go to the Shape Dynamics tab and add some Size Jitter and Angle Jitter.

Image of sparkle brush photoshop 29

Step 22

In the Scattering tab, increase the Scatter and Count.

Image of sparkle brush photoshop 30

Step 23

Test your brush now. Feel free to adjust the settings again to achieve the desired result. Change the size while painting to make the effect more natural.
